Today,
the Church remembers the day when the Apostles chose the disciple of Jesus who
was to replace Judas Iscariot. In one of his homilies St. John Crisostom quite
rightly says: «When we are to opt for persons who must have a certain responsibility,
we may have to face certain rivalries or discussions». This is why St. Peter
«simply ignores the envy that it might have arisen», and leaves it up to chance
and divine inspiration, thus, avoiding such possibility. And this Father of the
Church goes on saying: «And it just so happens that quite often important
decisions may be very upsetting». In the Gospel, our Lord speaks to the
Apostles of the joy they should have. Joy and peace are always fruit of the
exuberance of our apostolic commitment and of our struggle to become saints. Romano
Guardini wrote: «The source of joy is to be found in a person's deeper intimacy
(...). It is there where God resides. Then, joy widens and makes us glitter.
And all that is beautiful can be perceived by us in all its brilliance». When
we feel unhappy, we must know how to pray along with St. Thomas More: «Lord,
give me a sense of humor and I will find happiness in life and profit for
others» • AE

León Bloy decía que la única manera de
vencer la tristeza es dejar de amarla. Pareceria que los cristianos nos aferramos a ella. Quizá por eso el Señor quiso dedicar cuarenta días a caminar entre nosotros, a hablarnos de esa alegría pascual que no es otra cosa que el gozo de ser cristianos ¡Ay cuánto nos cuesta aprender a ser
felices! Y qué difícil comprender que nuestro Dios es infinitamente
mejor de lo que nos imaginamos. “La tierra cree que tiene mil razones para
estar triste. Y el cielo tiene mil razones para que estemos alegres”, decía Evely. Es verdad. Ahora sabemos que ya nadie será capaz de quitarnos esa Alegría, pero, ¿cuál es
el secreto? Sin duda creer y permanecer en el amor del Señor: “Como el Padre me ha
amado, así os he amado yo”. No necesitamos más. Esto lo lograron bien las
primeras comunidades cristianas: fueron capaces de abrirse a otras culturas,
costumbres y mentalidades para que primara y porque primara sobre otras la única
ley capaz de hacernos libres: el amor de Cristo. Estamos en el mes de mayo, nunca más oportuno el momento para pedir a la Santísima Virgen -a ella le llamamos Causa de nuestra alegría- que no deje nunca de susurrarnos al oído las palabras de su Hijo para que nuestra
alegría llegue a plenitud.
